- Congratulations to the photographer for this winning image! A world has been divided into three realms here in this image, but in this case the painted figures in the mural seem more alive than the real people in the background. The geometry of the painted figures and the real shadowed figure in the window is also really interesting – a sort of triangle that brings real and imagined worlds together and this is helped by the repetition of shapes. The third realm of the reflection in the bottom/foreground is working here too visually, and feels like the dream space.

- Taken on the Upper West Side of Manhattan at the end of an evening storm. A fence surrounds the schoolyard in the photo, but my lens was just small enough to fit between the chain links. When I was done shooting, I turned to find a security guard eyeing me. I showed her the photos I had taken and, though unimpressed, she seemed reassured that my motives were innocent. Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mark II, M.45mm 1.8 at 1/13 sec f/1.8 ISO 200. Many thanks to I-Shot-It and the judges for this recognition.

- The composition works because of the alliteration of shapes – the capital building, the sign and the two heads on left and right sides – gives the viewer’s eye a path to move through the image. This image effectively communicates the message in the help up sign both literally and visually.

- A great photo will work both visually and mentally - and this photo does both. The visual appeal of color and repetition of shape engages the viewer’s attention and the empty scene creates a sense of mystery. Well done!

- The dramatic rendering of the scene – the monument and the clouds – is captivating, but it’s the juxtaposition of the round balloon and clouds in the background with the cubic foreground that makes this image work.

- While seemingly simple, almost bland, this image continues to hold the viewer’s attention. It’s quite brilliant, really, for its use of line and shape compositionally. The dotted line in the middle of the road is repeated in the street lights, the window at the top of the green house also repeats in the church, and the windows themselves sort of pick up the dashed lines too.

- The soft tones combined with the stable triangle shaped color section at the center of this image impart a soothing quality. When you stare at this image and let your eyes relax it can change perspective suddenly as if you were looking up instead of out. The repetition of shape between the buildings and the stalls in the night market also help this image. Very nice!

- The way that the blue and green in the foreground merges with the colors in the building in the background sort of flattens out the image in an interesting visual way. It’s fun how the arched figure in the foreground can bring the image back. Look at the blue and follow it up to the building and everything goes flat, and then it all jumps back when you look at the woman again. Very cool!
