  • The reflection of the boy in the train window is almost like a movie. It also makes you think of the warm inside with cold outside. We discussed the colors for a bit but decided that the atmosphere and dream of the pictures does come through clearly.

  • The photo location was Chicago, IL. The subject in this photo is my grandson who loves trains and who was thrilled to be able to take his first real train ride that day. This photo was taken with a Kodak EasyShare z650. This camera is several years old, and although I have other cameras, it is excellent with natural light photos and does a wonderful job with stop action.

  • This photograph is one of the judges favorites. Composition, light and contrast make this outstanding. A white dog in so many dark elements makes us look twice.

  • Maybe the couple on the photo in the background is the same couple who is pictured in the foreground. What has changed? Time. Time came in between. The love between this man and woman is still the same, perhaps with more understanding and experience. A wonderful and deep photograph with great light.

  • My name is Paul Mora and this picture is titled "Her Last Days". My family and I were visiting my grandparents when I saw my grandpa doing my grandma's hair. It wasn't until I was about to take the picture when I noticed their wedding picture(painting) in the background so I stepped back to fit it in and it came out great. She passed away 2 months after the photo was taken. I used a Nikon D7000 with a 50mm lense at 1/80s - f/2.8.

  • All the yellow cabs are so New York! Nice angle and composition. Is it real or is this photo taken from a model scene? Would work very well as a large wall print also.

  • Thank you for the Mark of Excellence. My name is Dave and I've lived in New York City for 36 years. This photo was taken from an elevated subway line and I had my Nikon D700 and my Nikkor 45mm PC-E tilt/shift lens with me. As my luck would have it, the train came to a stop directly above the taxi depot (in Long Island City, Queens) affording me just enough time to adjust my tilt and focus settings on the PC-E lens which are all manual (f2.8 with 8 degrees of tilt). Very little post processing.

  • This is a nice way to see the Sydney Opera House, a new angle seldom captured and definitely not experienced when visiting. Well executed.

  • Thank you for the Mark of Excellence. I shot this photo from a hotel window early one morning as I was packing my bags to head home. There had been a lot of rain over the last few days in Sydney and the clouds had come in low and moving quite fast this morning creating an interesting look. I propped my Leica M9 against the window to get a longer exposure with the summilux 50mm attached.

  • Seems like the shadow of a surfer is moving by. Night is approaching and no one else is out there. Great composition and it works so well in black and white. Our compliments!

  • This is an interesting and bizarre image. Almost too many stories in one, but it does actually work. It has different things going on, not necessarily connected to each other in an obvious way. A bird sitting on a stick, the washing hanging from the washing line, boats floating on the sea. Very cool!

  • I really appreciate the recognition! My name is Frieda Kat and I am a 26 year old freelance photographer living in Brooklyn, NY. This photo was taken in Varanasi, India along the Ganges River. Simple pictures are difficult to come by in such a busy place. Everywhere you look something is happening while overlapping something else. Often my pictures in India would capture the chaos as well as the beauty in all the bustling cities. Taken with my Nikon D80, 35 mm lens.

  • I'm a 75 year old, wire service, retired photographer. This picture was taken in 1995 in Charlotte, NC, during an arts festival. Unfortunately, the name of the violinist is not available. The violinist was entertaining the attendees at this festival, which is a yearly event. I shot this with my Nikon D100, with an 80 - 200 lens (2.8).

  • Wow! Thank you! I've only recently discovered what can be done with strobes. Lots of fun and actually quite simple. A ten gallon fish tank, two peppers. black background, and two strobes. One positioned above, the other below lower right. Nikon D80, F8, shutter 160, and a small amount of post-op in Photoshop. The tricky part was a balancing act... dropping the peppers in one hand while tripping the shutter at the right moment with the other....Ya, I got wet. lol!

  • A side street off Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, LA. Leica M9 with a 28mm. I had the sun on my back and standing at the corner of a marble covered building. This gave a great reflection at such a tight angle. The lady had forgotten her sunglasses, not a good look in hollywood, and raised her clutch bag as she walked into the setting sun creating an unusual and yet classic look.
