what can i say ... this image is simply stand-out ... the dramatic play of light and shadow, the fabulous lines, the arch of the top neck, the rich colors ... absolutely stellar photo. a well-deserved win in a very very tough contest. ~ illona

Thanks so much Illona! This was a wonderful honor. I'm based in Boston, MA. This shot was taken with my ancient Nikon D70s with 50 mm. I love watching my two Heathens (Basenjis) play. It is almost entirely silent. Although Raisin will often make what I call her "Creature from the Black Lagoon" noise. Thanks again!

I would first like to thank all those who voted!! Seriously, THANK YOU!! My name is William Osborn, I took this with my Nikon D70 attached to a Nikon AF 80-200 (2.8)D lens. While i do a good amount of Photoshop editing on many of my photos, NOT ONE SINGLE PIXEL in this photo has been changed..this is exactly as I Shot It. I am happy to say that this sail boat DID survive Hurricane Sandy, regrettably the boat from which this photo was taken and the marina in Atlantic Highlands NJ from where we both sailed did not. Again, my Thanks to those who voted !!

Congratulations for this beautiful shot, it takes a very good technique to achieve this, the dew brings a lot to the composition, the focus is perfect, great job!

First I have to say that I'm humble and proud that you liked my picture. It's really inspiring. Thank you so much for this honor :-)
I also have to say that you have a magnificent web-site, a great source of inspiration.
My name is Audun Wigen, and I live in Norway. I shot this photo just outside my bedroom window. I spotted this fly when I was out for the morning newspaper. It was sitting on this small white flower, covered with moist, not able to fly. Two hours after I shot this picture I went outside to look for the fly again. It was sitting on the same flower, still not able to fly.
I used Canon 5d MK-II with MP-E 65mm. I used a ring-flash on the lens, and a 580ex flash mounted on a home-made bracket to give light from above. A home made difusser (made from an ice-box) was mounted on the 580 flash.
My native language is norwegian, so my home page is not in english - sorry. But I'm working on a english version, so check back in a couple of days :-)

Thanks to those who voted for my photo! My two cats love to have mock battles with each other, through the glass of the door. This was one of those happy occasions when my Canon 5D was beside me and ready to shoot when I saw this cat spying on her cat sister, who was inside. Cat Ninja! (Converted to sepia in post processing).
