Judges Comment this image was an early-runner for me ... the depth of the shadows and the angle make it extremely evocative and memorable. well shot and a definite fave. ~ illona Photographers Comment My Name is Dana P. Hale. I live in Sylacauga, Alabama. I shoot with a Nikon D5100. One day as I walk through the yard with my cats, one of them (smokey) jumped into this dead pear tree. She stayed there long enough for me to shoot this photo. No editing was needed for this photo. This is exactly how it came out, and I couldn't be happier. I thank you all for the achievement and it means so much to me! Thank you all so much and I look forward to entering many many more!
Thank you! |
Judges Comment absolutely beautiful. wonderfully framed and captured. great use of depth of field and b&w conversion. a definite fave that shows its strength compositionally whether viewed large or small. well done. ~ illona Photographers Comment I'm honored that this black and white treatment of my cat Snickers surveying his surroundings from a dogwood tree branch won third prize in this competition! This photo was taken in my yard in Virginia using a Pentax K-r and Pentax DA L 55-300 lens. I shoot RAW and used Lightroom to convert the shot to black and white. Thank you very much for your kind words about the shot!

Judges Comment for a straight-forward, looking-up portrait, this image stands out from others because of its great control of depth of field but also the beautiful use of color -- using complimentary colors of orange and green. just super. well done! ~ illona Photographers Comment One of the first photographs I took after purchasing my first 50mm 1.8 lens. This kitty, Mikko, passed away in July 2009. Was a good kitty then by being an amazing model, always posing and looking straight up at the camera, and has just proved that he still is, by earning me $150!!! haha Thanks guys! |
Judges Comment awesome and fun capture. great management of light and shadow, beautifully framed. an instant favorite. ~ illona Photographers Comment Just workin' a fun situation with a natural ham. Canon 5D Mark II, EOS 24 - 70 f2.8L USM. No post processing; what you see is what I shot: Hartshots Photography; hartshots.com |
Judges Comment great capture and unique image. i love that the b&w conversion keeps the elements of this image simple so that the focus can be drawn to the cat along the roof. well done. ~ illona Photographers Comment my cat "huggy", there is no way i could keep her from playing on the roof and jumping roof to roof. i shot this with a canon t1i, no editing and no cropping. thanks for the mark of excellent's! - Joe Moon / Grand Rapids Michigan |
Judges Comment beautiful composition, light and tones, and a wonderful contrast of textures. lovely. well done. ~ illona Photographers Comment My name is Lesley Bailey of Happy Tails Pet Photography (www.happytailspetphotography.com), Manitoba, Canada. This is our newest & littlest furry family member, Sassy, out on her first "modeling assignment”! We adopted her from Rescue Siamese shortly after she had been surrendered into their care along with her littermates. Shot taken with my Nikon D700 & processed in LR 3 & PS. Thank you so much for selecting my photo; my 4th Mark of Excellence award to date. Congrats to all the winners! |
Judges Comment the play of light, shadows and architectural lines make this image truly compelling. nicely done! ~ illona Photographers Comment Thank you for your review and lovely commentary of my work! This photograph is of Chloe, who we rescued as a kitten after she had suffered terrible abuse. I have always felt this photo conveys her story and personality. This was taken at home with my Nikon D80, Nikkor VR 18-200 lens at 18mm, F4.5, 1/1000. Converted to black and white in Nikon Capture NX 2. Kimberly Herold, Navarre, FL. :) |
Judges Comment great angle and framing. nicely seen and captured, and a great choice to convert this to b&w. well done. ~ illona Photographers Comment Thank you for the mark of excellence! My name is Autumn. I'm 19 years old and I shoot with a Nikon L100. This fur-ball is named Marley. She spent most of her days with me watching out the window and sleeping in the sunlight. Very sweet kitty! :) |
Judges Comment lovely image -- great tones and light, wonderful depth of field, and of course, and gorgeous subject. beautifully shot. ~ illona Photographers Comment My name is Katja Zipser and I´m from Saxony, Germany. This photo is the result of a big photo session with the kitten and was completed when she got her deserved treats. The photo has to be taken quickly, as she gleefully licked her mouth. The picture was taken with the Nikon D3s and 24.70 / 2.8, only using available light. Thank you very much for the mark of excellence. |
